Diabetic Screening

The method now recognised for screening diabetic patients is via digital retinal photography.

It is important that patients over the age of 11 years who are diabetic have their eyes digitally photographed each year to look for any changes that can frequently occur.  Diabetic Retinopathy can cause loss of sight and early diagnosis and treatment may help prevent deterioration.

City & Guilds Approved Centre

Neil Berry Optometrists is a City & Guilds approved centre for Diabetic Screening. We are one of only a few independent optometrists that provide this service within the Sutton Coldfield and Erdington areas.

Please note, as part of the screening examination eye drops are used.  These may cause blurring of vision and sensitivity to light.  Symptoms can last from 2 to 4 hours or sometimes longer.

PATIENTS ARE ADVISED NOT TO DRIVE TO AND FROM THE SCREENING APPOINTMENT.

The digital images taken during screening are directly accessible by the hospital eye service and the results are e-mailed to the respective doctors. Patients will also receive a copy of their results by post.
